Mumbai: In what can be called a ‘response’ to a Muslim cleric’s call, veteran Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam on Wednesday shaved his head off. He said the only reason for doing this was to make clear that he was never an ‘anti-Muslim’.
Sonu Nigam held a press conference (PC) to answer all the questions pertaining to his controversial tweets on Azaan which had lately ignited a community backlash against him, a glance of which can still be taken on the social media.
Before moving to what else the ace singer said during the PC, we must tell you what actually made him get his head shaved LIVE on national television. It must be recalled that in reaction to Sonu’s remarks on Azaan, vice president of West Bengal United Minority Council Syaed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi had announced a reward of Rs. 10 lacs for anyone who would ‘shave off’ the singer’s head and garland him with old shoes.
“I have been following ‘Mohd Rafi Saheb’ since the beginning of my singing career. I have many friends who are Muslims. Even my driver belongs to the same religion. I just want to make very clear that I’m a secular person, totally. Please, stop calling me an anti-Muslim. My remarks were not about Azaan but the loud sound. And I still say that playing loud sounds on speakers is ‘gundagardi’ for me,” said the noted singer. “I really don’t understand what is happening in our country? People have turned so intolerant. They are fighting on trivial issues, lynching one-another. Today, anyone can issue a fatwa. God bless all,” he added.
